In the temperate forests of the Northern Hemisphere, a light wind carries the scent of pine needles and the sound of a stream. This is the home of the bear.
Everyone knows bears hibernate, but they do not sleep straight through to spring. Hibernation is a way to store energy, slow metabolism and heart rate; in a crisis they can still wake, defend, and recover a startling fighting force. In hibernation a bear can reclaim urea from metabolism and rebuild it into muscle protein, going the whole season without eating or eliminating. In particular, a mother bear can give birth in a fast of complete hibernation, and in her sleep secrete milk rich in high-energy fat to nurse the cubs until she wakes in spring.
Though the body is huge, a bear's sprint can outrun a track athlete; a bear at home in water can swim past an Olympic champion with ease.
Bears do not only hunt animals; they also eat insects and plants. After they take fruit, they spread the seeds kilometers away in their dung. Digging for roots and insects, they turn forest soil over a wide area and help nutrients cycle through the earth. That nature makes them guardians of the forest ecology.
