Deep in a pine and cypress wood that shuts out the sun, heavy footsteps roll through warm, damp air. Across the long Mesozoic wild, two great plant-eating dinosaurs, in different ages, showed utterly different wisdoms of survival.
To take in enough energy to keep a huge defensive body, Triceratops, living about sixty-eight million years ago, could cut the hardest conifer and cycad fiber with its teeth. Its famous three-horned frill was not only a defense; it could also shed heat and regulate temperature.
Scholars once inferred that Brachiosaurus lived in water, breathing through that large hole on the crown like a snorkel. Contemporary biophysics has shown that a body so huge, once sunk, would have the chest crushed by the pressure; it could not inflate the lungs by drawing air, and so could not breathe. And the true nostrils sit near the mouth. Brachiosaurus was a land animal through and through. As a plant-eater it could, with that long neck, reach the high browse other dinosaurs could not.
Whether the Triceratops with its special frill, or Brachiosaurus as modern science has looked at it again, both show us perfectly how, in that age of dinosaurs where the weak were meat, life evolved a startling power to adapt in order to live.
