A dark polar night lies over the vast glaciers. Penguins in black-and-white coats, round in body, bring a little bustle of life to the frozen pole, and each kind of penguin has a charm of its own.
All penguins are animals of the group, with a strict division of family labor. So that a mother who has given all her strength in laying may return to the sea to feed, the father takes on the duty of the egg. So they need not leave the nest or soil it while they incubate, some penguins have evolved a striking way to relieve themselves. Adult Adelie penguins, for instance, walk to the rim of the nest, turn and bend, and with pressure from the gut shoot the waste tens of centimeters out, keeping the nest clean and the feathers clean.
Penguins also have a special pattern of sleep, especially while they incubate, when sleep becomes very broken. Research has found that chinstrap penguins may sleep four seconds on average, over and over through the day. More than ten thousand of those second-sleeps, waking again, not only keep the brain on high alert but can add up to as much as eleven hours of total sleep in a day.
These wondrous beings who share the world with us now face the grave results of a changing climate. We hope that in living with nature we may find again the strength to keep the balance of the Earth's ecology.
