The elephant before you, swinging its trunk, comes from the African grassland. It is the largest animal on land.
That long nose stays with you. The trunk has no bone, only a single muscle, yet it holds nearly ninety thousand bundles of fiber. It can lift a tree trunk weighing two hundred kilograms, pick up a single peanut with care, and with huge suction draw food into the nasal cavity. More interesting still: as humans have a dominant hand, elephants have a dominant trunk. From the folds in the skin of the trunk you can tell whether it is left- or right-sided; the side with the deeper folds is the one it prefers.
The great ears not only catch sound with keenness; they can hear infrasound wholly beyond the human ear, and they also shed heat. The thick pads of the feet are like a precise audio receiver, catching faint tremors from under the ground, like a stereo radar, taking in an alarm or a call to mate from companions several kilometers away.
The elephant is a gentle guardian giant of the grassland. Yet, facing rampant poaching and the breaking of habitat, these huge shapes are vanishing faster, and they urgently need a human hand, to guard their home together.
