長頸鹿的脖子究竟是如何演化來的呢?有一派學者認為,這是短脖子和長脖子的祖先,在演化過程中的優勝劣汰。長脖子能輕易吃到樹上的葉子,所以更容易存活下來。另一派學者認為,雄性長頸鹿會以脖子與頭部作為武器,脖子強壯在演化過程會更具存活優勢。但關於長脖子的爭議,科學界目前仍沒有單一的定論。
即使長頸鹿的脖子那麼長,卻和人類一樣只有7塊頸椎骨,而為了將血液輸送到近2公尺高的頭部,牠們的血壓是全部哺乳動物最高的,為了防止低頭時不會血液逆流,頸靜脈還有特殊瓣膜。
長頸鹿在夜晚還會發出一種低沉規律的哼鳴聲,就像夜間雷達一樣,可以幫助在能見度為零的黑夜裡,確認同伴的訊息。

How did the giraffe's neck evolve? One school holds that it is survival of the fittest between short-necked and long-necked ancestors. A long neck can easily reach the leaves in the trees, and so is more likely to live. Another school holds that male giraffes use neck and head as weapons, and a strong neck would have more advantage in the course of evolution. But on the long neck, science still has no single settled view.
Even with a neck so long, the giraffe has only seven cervical vertebrae, the same as a human. To send blood to a head nearly two meters up, their blood pressure is the highest of all mammals; and to keep blood from running back when they lower the head, the jugular has special valves.
At night the giraffe also gives a low, regular hum, like a radar in the dark, that can help them, in a night of zero visibility, confirm the presence of companions.
