Before your eyes is a desert fox specimen, with those long, large ears. When evening comes and the desert begins to cool, they lift their heads above the horizon.
Unlike other canids that tend to live alone, the desert fox has chosen a highly social, group-living strategy. They live in family units of more than ten, led by the parents, with adult brothers and sisters helping to raise the young. Among the silent dunes they keep in touch through a complex code of calls.
The harshness of survival has forced them to use every drop of water in the body to the extreme. Desert foxes never drink liquid water in their lives; they keep the balance only with the tissue fluids of prey and the roots, stems, and fruits of plants. A special kidney can press the water lost in excretion down to a physical limit, producing urine so thick it is almost crystalline.
Those signature ears work as heat sinks by day. When night falls they become a keen acoustic radar, catching the faint tremor of insects moving deep in the sand. Hair on the soles blocks radiant heat, so they can travel the desert freely. Every structure of the desert fox becomes an improbable miracle of life in this barren land.
