眼前這隻蒼鷺標本，昂首靜止的姿態，彷彿正佇立在清晨的森林溼地裡，等待水中獵物。
「靜止不動」正是蒼鷺特殊的捕食技巧，牠們能將呼吸與動作降到最低，在獵物游過的瞬間精準刺擊。除了魚類，牠們甚至會捕食小型哺乳動物與其他幼鳥。
蒼鷺胸前的羽絨，能生成極其細緻的粉末，就像天然乾洗粉，能有效防水、吸附並清除羽毛上的魚類黏液和髒污。牠的腳掌中趾外緣還演化出了一排特化的構造，形狀有點像梳子，牠們使用腳爪沾取胸前的粉末梳理身體。這一套渾然天成的清潔保養大法，讓牠們即使生活在極度潮濕的森林與泥濘濕地中，也能維持羽毛乾燥，杜絕寄生蟲。
每逢秋季，許多棲息在高緯度地區的蒼鷺會展開長達數千公里的長途遷徙，並依賴沿途的林地與濕地作為休息補給站。當蒼鷺飛躍世界，守護他們旅途上每一座森林與水域，我們才能留住大自然和諧平衡的未來。
The heron specimen before you holds its head high and still, as if standing in a forest wetland at dawn, waiting for prey in the water.
Stillness itself is the heron's hunting craft. They can drop breath and motion to the lowest point, then strike in the instant the prey swims past. Besides fish, they will even take small mammals and other nestlings.
Down on the heron's breast makes an extremely fine powder, like a natural dry-cleaning dust, that sheds water and lifts fish slime and dirt from the feathers. The outer edge of the middle toe has evolved a row of specialized structures, a little like a comb. They dip a claw in the breast powder and preen the body. This innate grooming keeps the feathers dry even in soaking forest and muddy wetland, and keeps parasites at bay.
Each autumn, many herons that nest at high latitudes set out on migrations of thousands of kilometers, relying on woods and wetlands along the way as rest and supply stations. When herons fly the world, only by guarding every forest and water on their road can we keep nature's balance.
