Walk into the cloud-wrapped mountain valleys, through dense bamboo, and you are in the green home of the panda.
Though bamboo, hard as it is, is the giant panda's staple, in biological classification they are true members of the order Carnivora, family Ursidae. They gave up meat because, more than four million years ago, the gene that tastes meat mutated, and meat no longer drew them. They have eaten plants for millions of years, yet they still keep a carnivore's gut, which also lowers how well they digest bamboo. To keep from starving, they spend more than ten hours a day eating; the rest of the time they sleep to save energy.
To live on a high-fiber diet, the giant panda's own brain reward system changed too. Research has found that when they chew bamboo, the brain releases dopamine, a pleasure close to what humans feel with high-fat, high-sugar food. That physiology, paired with an extremely keen sense of smell, lets them treat mild bamboo as a feast, and hunt down the most nourishing, fresh shoots and tender leaves in the forest.
Through countless evolutionary compromises, the giant panda proves the improbable force of life when it meets a special world.
