Look! The gorilla before you is beating its chest. It comes from the deep, steaming, leaf-thick heart of the African tropical rainforest.
That famous chest-beating is not anger or excitement. It is a shared language among gorillas. A laryngeal air sac that runs from the neck into the chest cavity resonates to carry the message. When other gorillas hear the boom, they can tell, with precision, the body size and the information of the one who struck.
Gorillas are not only genetically very close to humans; they also care about ritual, including a distinctive bedtime rite. They take time to weave a bowl-shaped nest from branches and leaves, and they sleep in a new nest every night. Even if the next day's range is tiny, they will not reuse a nest unless building materials in the environment run short. The habit lowers the chance of parasites and infection in the damp, stifling rainforest. Abandoned nests break down and return to nature.
Earth's rainforests are vanishing fast, and illegal poaching is rampant. To protect the gorilla is also to protect the future of the planet's ecology and climate.
